Le vicende legate alle missioni spaziali sono spesso, troppo spesso, descritte esasperando i problemi che sono “vita quotidiana” in un ambiente tanto estremo.
Cosa risaputa, e anche d’attualità vista la gaffe della presunta esplosione dell’Atlantis riferita dal TG di Rai1.
Chiedo a voi a questo punto se mi è sfuggito qualcosa, se ho perso qualche comunicato stampa, chessò insomma, se ho commesso un peccato di disinformazione che un admin di forum a tema astronautico non dovrebbe mai commettere.
Apro per un momento il sito di Repubblica, e mi trovo di fronte, in prima pagina, all’apertura che vedete nel primo allegato. Corro a vedere l’articolo e comincio a capire. Basta guardare l’immagine della ISS riportata a corredo del pezzo giornalistico.

The navigation system computers are required to fire Russian maneuvering jets to make major changes in the station’s orientation. Minor adjustments are made with U.S. control moment gyroscopes, but that cannot make major changes and the system periodically has to be reset using rocket control. The station cannot safely operate without full orientation control to ensure its solar arrays stay face-on to the sun and to prevent sensitive systems from getting too hot or too cold.
The problem is not serious as long as the shuttle Atlantis remains docked because the orbiter’s thrusters can be used, when needed, to make adjustments that are beyond the ability of the gyros or when the gyro system needs to be reset. But the shuttle will undock and return to Earth next week and the Russians have been working around the clock to get the computer glitches resolved before the orbiter departs.

Non sto affatto negando che a bordo della ISS ci sia un problema fastidioso, ma non successe una cosa simile anche durante la missione di Guidoni? Siamo prossimi alla disintegrazione in atmosfera?
Mi spiace, non riesco a farmi piacere questi servizi redatti sempre con lo stesso tono scandalistico/sensazionalistico. Chi segue da vicino le vicende della ISS sa quanti problemi, anche seri, si affrontano con una certa regolarità. Non c’è affatto bisogno di scrivere un pezzo dando l’idea che la ISS sia una stazione come la MIR degli utlimi tempi, cioè un vero e proprio azzardo per l’equipaggio.
Ne esce sempre un’immagine “da far west” della corsa allo spazio: deve sempre sembrare tutto sull’orlo della catastrofe, sennò l’argomento “non tira”. E sia, se se ne deve scrivere così, meglio riempire le pagine dei quotidiani di intercettazioni del politico di turno.
Scrivere un pezzo esatto e corretto su certi argomenti è facile: basterebbe un revisore scientifico in redazione, come credo ce ne siano tanti sul mercato delle testate scientifiche, e si eviterebbero strafalcioni imbarazzanti come quello del TG-1, o di far credere al lettore “passante della strada” che quella nella pagina di Repubblica on line sia la ISS.
Macchè revisore… basta google: scrivete iss su google e cliccate sul link immagini… voilà.

I cosmonauti stanno tentando di riparare i computer in panne (ANSA) - WASHINGTON, 15 giu - Non e' per ora prevista l'evacuazione della Stazione spaziale internazionale, i cui computer principali sono in panne da due giorni. Bill Gerstenmaier, dirigente della Nasa, ha parlato di "possibilita' remota". I cosmonauti russi sulla Iss sono al lavoro per cercare di far ripartire il sistema, che sembra sia stato vittima di un corto circuito. Mosca, intanto, sta studiando la possibilita' di anticipare l'invio di una navetta cargo con pezzi di ricambio per i computer.

Aggiornamenti pubblicati nel thread sulla STS-117, le cose sembrano migliorare,ma l’evacuazione è fuori luogo, per tutta la durata della missione shuttle esso può controllare da solo tutta la ISS, successivamente si potranno disattivare i nuovi pannelli o attendere aggiornamenti software previsti a giorni, questa notte i due russi rimarranno svegli per proseguire con il lavoro.

So they asked station commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and flight engineer Oleg Kotov to bypass the suspect power supply circuitry in the other four computers.
“While Danny and J.R. were outside, our Russian colleagues were busy uplinking a procedure to the crew in an attempt to bypass that sensitive circuit to see if we could prevent this constant rebooting that the computers were going through that wouldn’t allow them to come up,” said MIke Suffredini, manager of the space station program at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.
“It was a very simple shunt, they removed a connector on the back of the computers and they inserted a simple shunt and the shunt allowed them to bypass this circuitry. They went to activate the four that they thought were still good and all four of the computers came up in the configuration that tracked each other.”
