Il disco per grammofono inserito nelle prime due navicelle del Programma Voyager contenente suoni e immagini selezionate al fine di portare le diverse varietà di vita e cultura della Terra.
È concepito per qualunque forma di vita extraterrestre o per la razza umana del futuro che lo possa trovare.

Il messaggio a bordo dei Voyager è costituito da un disco d’oro (Golden Phonograph Record) contente il sistema periodico degli elementi e le altre informazioni chiave sul nostro ciclo biologico e sulla posizione del nostro pianeta nel cosmo, una ricca galleria di immagini sulla nostra terra, e la registrazione di un messaggio in 55 lingue e di musiche di tutti i continenti, e altre informazioni scientifiche.
Sul retro del disco (inciso su una facciata), che può anche essere considerata la sua copertina (cover) sono disegnate in forma schematica le indicazioni sul contenuto e le istruzioni per estrarre le informazioni.
La scelta delle informazioni e tutta la organizzazione del disco è stata curata da una commissione di scienziati, coordinata da Carl Sagan, che già aveva ideato la semplice placca delle stazioni Pioneer. Sagan, uno scienziato che ha collaborato con la NASA sin dal 1950, a supporto di innumerevoli programmi e missioni, scomparso nel 1996, è stato anche il co-fondatore e presidente della Planetary Society, dedicata allo studio dei pianeti e delle ipotesi di vita extra-terrestre.
In un libro da lui curato, Murmurs of Earth (Mormorii della terra), ha raccontato la genesi e gli scopi della iniziativa e le motivazioni delle scelte fatte per i materiali iconografici, sonori e musicali inseriti nel disco.
Il disco è organizzato dal punto di vista logico in tre sezioni:
Documentazione scientifica / Immagini / Messaggi registrati (rumori, suoni e musiche)
Le prime due sezioni sono riportate sul disco sotto forma di immagini, codificate con tecnica simile a quella televisiva su più linee (più o meno come il Laserdisc analogico), mentre suoni e musiche sono registrate con la tecnologia del microsolco (ancora analogica, quindi). Insieme al disco è fissata sulla astronave anche la testina di lettura ed è stato ideato un sistema per guidare gli eventuali ritrovatori alla decodifica del contenuto.
Il contenuto dettagliato, frutto del lavoro della commissione (Carl Sagan, Frank Drake, Ann Druyan, Timothy Ferris, Jon Lomberg e Linda Salzman Sagan), riportato nel libro citato sopra Murmurs of Earth, è elencato nel seguito.
