- Jonathan McDowell - @planet4589.bsky.social
- Marco Langbroek - @marcolangbroek.bsky.social
- Susanne Auer - @auersusan.bsky.social
- Mike Brown - @plutokiller.com
- Jessie Christiansen - @aussiastronomer.bsky.social
- Ethan Siegel - @startswithabang.bsky.social
- Philth Plague - @philplait.bsky.social
- The Spaceshipper 🚀 - @thespaceshipper.bsky.social
- Kevin M. Gill - @kevinmgill.bsky.social

> Bluesky has been suggested as a good alternative to Twitter, but the phenomenon of academics switching social media platforms has not previously been studied. Here we report on the results of a survey distributed to scientists on Twitter and Bluesky (_n_ = 813). Results overwhelmingly confirm that changes to Twitter have made the social media platform no longer professionally useful or pleasant, and that many scientists have abandoned it in favor of Bluesky.

📜 **[How is science discussed on Bluesky?](https://arxiv.org/pdf/2507.18840v2)** [pdf]

> Amid the migration of academics from X, the social media platform Bluesky has
> emerged as a potential alternative. To assess its viability and relevance for science communication, this study presents the first large-scale analysis of scholarly article dissemination on Bluesky, exploring its potential as a new source of social media metrics. We collected and analysed over 2.6 million Bluesky posts referencing 532,302 scholarly articles from January 2023 to July 2025, integrating metadata from the OpenAlex database. Temporal trends, disciplinary coverage, language use, textual characteristics, and user engagement were examined. A sharp increase in scholarly activity on Bluesky was observed from November 2024 to January 2025, coinciding with broader academic shifts away from X.

📜 **[Are there stars in Bluesky? A comparative exploratory analysis of altmetric mentions between X and Bluesky](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1751157725000641)**

> This study examines the shift in the scientific community from X (formerly Twitter) to Bluesky, its impact on scientific communication, and consequently on social metrics (altmetrics). We analysed 14,497 publications from multidisciplinary and Library and Information Science (LIS) journals between January 2024 and March 2025. The results reveal a notable increase in Bluesky activity for multidisciplinary journals in November 2024, likely influenced by political and platform changes, with mentions multiplying for journals like Nature and Science.

> **[The Astrosky Ecosystem: An independent online platform for science...](https://arxiv.org/abs/2601.16838)**
>
> While almost everything that astronomers study occurs in the vacuum of space, astronomy itself does not \`happen in a vacuum'. Interactions between scientists, as well as outreach to members of the public, improve extensively from access to good...

> In this proceeding, we present The Astrosky Ecosystem, which is an initiative to develop open-source tools and integrations for social media, principally the Bluesky social network. We explain how our project enables the astronomy community to operate its own social media infrastructure, independent of for-profit corporations. We also discuss some of the project’s technical aspects, including its use of the AT Protocol for social networking, before concluding with ideas for the future. […]

> Beginning in July 2023, our project has been curating an ecosystem of open-source tools within the AT Protocol space to empower astronomers and astronomy organizations online. We aim to not only replicate the mostly positive 2010s experience of Twitter for astronomy but even exceed it. Our main effort so far has been in producing and curating the Astronomy feeds, which are a network of feeds with posts about astronomy and astrophotography that can be viewed on Bluesky. In total, we operate seventeen chronological feeds of posts, the three most popular of which currently see hundreds of posts per week from around 200–300 different users. […]

> In the near future, we are planning on expanding the range of the different tools we offer. Our next priority will be offering PDS (user data) hosting for astronomers online, cementing the independence and longevity of all astronomy content on AT Protocol applications. Better integrations with conferences, the arXiv, or telescopes are a possibility, particularly given the option for AT Protocol to quickly build new applications or data schemas while reusing existing account and data infrastructure. We are also investigating ways to further improve our feeds, such as by offering options to partially filter content by a user’s primary interests or improving our registration process.
