Q. What were the results of the tile repair demonstration that was tested during the EVA?Tell us of the results, to the extent that you are familiar with them.
A. Repair demonstrations of the TPS tiles and RCC panels were conducted during the first EVA.Currently, NASA is conducting wind tunnel tests on those samples to see if the repair samples would have survived the heat during reentry.NASA will use a type of wind tunnel known as an arcjet to test whether the samples survive in heat of around 3000 degrees F and if the samples do in fact survive, to then investigate in detail what the surface conditions would be like.
Similar tasks are planned for STS-121, which will launch next year.If there are any problems with the results from STS-114, then STS-121 will launch with a modified version of the test and try it again. If the results from our flight are satisfactory, then STS-121 will conduct demonstrations of other repair techniques.NASA is planning to pair up our STS-114 and STS-121 in order to conduct demonstration tasks for the return to flight.
