Today we are sending a manned mission with fully automatic control (Inspiration4) thanks to numerous tests and flights from all the countries contributed.
At the times, when Yuriy Gagarin went to space, every flight was a special mission with a lot of uncertainties. Every flight was a technical discovery, a humans experiment and discovery.
They were the heroes.

Anyway the Dragon spacecraft (both CRS and the Dragon 2) are highly automatized vehicles, the very same philosophy chose by Soviets at the start of the Space Race in early 60’s.
As pointed out elsewhere in this forum, the SpaceX is the most “Russian” of the American space enterprise. There are a lot of technological features that seems to be inherited mostly from Russian world rather than U.S., ranging from the Falcon 9 horizontal assembly to grid fins, from KeroLox Merlin to high automated operations, etc.
