"Today marks the third anniversary of the shuttle Columbia accident.
NASA doesn’t seem to be doing much to commemorate it today, I guess
they considered their day of remembrance and the 20th anniversary
Challenger activities to be enough.
My friend Philip Chien’s book “Columbia - Final Voyage” is finally
out, although it’s not in the bookstores yet. I received a galley
copy this week and it’s fascinating. I had heard that he was one of
the only reporters who actually covered the mission and filed regular
stories, and it really shows in the book.
The book concentrates on the astronauts and their mission - not so
much on the accident. He says he knew all seven astronauts to some
extent and it really shows with his personal interviews. I remember
where I was when the accident took place (doesn’t everybody?) and in
the days afterwards I wish I knew more about the crew, but all that
was available was the NASA bios and a bunch of rapidly researched but
incredibly inaccurate articles which came out shortly after the
accident and piece of crap quickie magazines and books in the months
shortly afterward. In particular I was really amused in the book
where it talks about how the “New York Times” distorted Willie
McCool’s comment about how it would be difficult to go to sleep just
five hours after launch (you try to go to sleep right after the most
exciting event in your life!) into a claim that Willie said it would
be difficult to work on a two shift mission.
Other books have interviews with the family members and people who
knew the crew - Phil’s book has the actual interviews with the crew
as well as the people who knew them. The book really makes them real
three dimensional people.
At least one “Friends & Partners” list member is featured extensively
in the book, John Charles. There’s even a photo of him with a rather
stoic look on his face while Laurel Clark draws his blood during a
training session!
I hadn’t realized that STS-107 was the mission which would have
launched Triana until I read the book and saw the CD. Here’s Phil’s
website where he talks about the Triana story in a somewhat less
politically-biased description than the recent F&P discussion. -

The root page for the website is - http://www.sts107.info/
Anyway like the book or not - it’s your choice. But for me today will
have many more memories as I think about Rick Husband, Willie McCool,
Dave Brown, Kalpana Chawla, Mike Anderson, Laurel Clark, and Ilan Ramon.

State incominciando ad invogliarmi all’acquisto…
State incominciando ad invogliarmi all'acquisto... :rage: :rage:
