Mi ricordo che questa domanda, a suo tempo, mi aveva incuriosito molto, ma allora non avevo trovato risposte.

In pratica non c’è una risposta chiara ed univoca, ma è opinione comune di chi risponde che le “chevron” (nelle varie posizioni, non solo a V rovesciata) indichino il reparto di appartenenza del mezzo all’interno di un’unità più grande.
Altra versione è che indichino semplicemente un “mezzo amico”, o addirittura che siano un simbolo di vittoria da esibire davanti al nemico.
A voi la scelta…
Cito comunque una delle spiegazioni che mi sembrano più sensate:
It has to do with the company the tank belongs to. So this is a sort of IFF device. It can also be used in combination with markings on the fume extractor to identify the platoon it belongs to. ^ ||| ( ^=A Company |||=third platoon) etc etc. At least this is how it worked at my unit when we tested it. I think it is very good because it is also visible with Thermal imaging devices (when they apply the correct paint or tape) and it is easy to get an overall view when you meet other tanks (situational awareness) in urban warfare for example
