Cattive notizie per il VLT.
ESO scrive che una società americana intende costruire un mega-complesso industriale nei pressi del Cerro Paranal. Se realizzato, il progetto causerebbe un danno irreparabile alle osservazioni astronomiche.
On December 24th, AES Andes, a subsidiary of the US power company AES Corporation, submitted a project for a massive industrial complex for environmental impact assessment. This complex threatens the pristine skies above ESO’s Paranal Observatory in Chile’s Atacama Desert, the darkest and clearest of any astronomical observatory in the world. The industrial megaproject is planned to be located just 5 to 11 kilometres from telescopes at Paranal, which would cause irreparable damage to astronomical observations, in particular due to light pollution emitted throughout the project’s operational life.
The project encompasses an industrial complex of more than 3000 hectares, which is close to the size of a city, or district, such as Valparaiso, Chile or Garching near Munich, Germany. It includes constructing a port, ammonia and hydrogen production plants and thousands of electricity generation units near Paranal.

After AES revealed the project in August 2024, Barcons says ESO met with the company several times between September and December, explaining the threat the city-size complex would pose to the observatories. Nevertheless, in late December AES submitted the proposal to Chile’s Environmental Assessment Service for an impact assessment. […] ESO “tried to have an open discussion” with AES, Pepe says. “They did not do the same, they did not take into account other interests.”

There are also “geopolitical and national strategic interests” at play, Pepe says, as Chile aims to boost its renewable energy industry. “There seems to be some tension within the Chilean government between the ministers of energy and so on, on one side, and the ministers of science on the other side. … What is a real shame here is that probably with a more open discussion, this situation could have been avoided.”

Cattive notizie confermate da una analisi tecnica. Il mega sito industriale andrebbe a impattare pesantemente l’attività di VLT e ELT.
Light pollution would increase by at least 35% above the VLT and by at least 55% above the south site of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory
Air turbulence would also increase, degrading seeing conditions by up to 40%
Vibrations from the project could seriously impair the functioning of the ELT and the VLTI, which are both extremely sensitive to micro-seismic noise.
Dust during construction is also problematic as it settles on the telescope mirrors and obstructs their view.

“Taken together, these disturbances seriously threaten the current and long-term viability of Paranal as a world-leader in astronomy, causing the loss of key discoveries about the Universe and compromising Chile’s strategic advantage in this area*,” says de Gregorio-Monsalvo. “*The only way to save Paranal’s pristine skies and protect astronomy for future generations is to relocate the INNA complex.”
Furthermore, INNA’s infrastructure is likely to encourage the development of an industrial hub in the area, which could turn Paranal into an unusable site for top-level astronomical observations.
