29.01 - How the space industry is preparing for Trump’s tariffs
The space sector relies on a complex and globally integrated supply chain, Novaspace’s Filotico noted. Imposing tariffs on imported materials, components and systems could lead to potentially far-reaching manufacturing delays. Even beyond the issue of whether raw materials are available in the U.S., she said manufacturers relying on third-party parts or systems would need substantial investments, expertise and time to bring those supply chains in-house.
19.02 - Now more expensive: the role of government tariffs in spacecraft supply (editoriale)
In all cases, tariffs imposed on sources of supply used by commercial organizations building spacecraft will negatively impact the entire industry with increased program costs and delays. Already struggling small space based ventures will now directly absorb the impacts as they try to find parts and pieces for their spacecraft and other products within budget for firm-fixed-price contracts they already bid and won.
[…] the U.S. Congress should consider approving Special Economic Zones for outer space in negotiated trade agreements so that imported goods that are destined for outer space and are merely a pass through on Earth can be processed without being subjected to tariffs.
26.02 - Space industry hunts for ways to adapt to Trump’s trade policies
Space business leaders said during a Feb. 25 Space Tech Expo webinar that tariffs — and threats of additional import taxes — will drive up near-term costs for satellite systems and launch vehicles. Among the concerns are higher duties on imported raw materials and electronic components critical for space hardware.
[…] Meyouhas said these dynamics are also playing out with U.S. allies such as Canada, which is reassessing trade alliances in response to proposed tariffs. “Canada is going to take a hard look at what is key and critical for them to have as a capability that is not necessarily reliant on the U.S. or other countries,” he said. “or maybe they end up partnering with other countries that they don’t feel as threatened by.”
